It’s a simple process and it doesn’t require any particular skill – just a desire to tune into your deep wisdom and desires, making an intention (conscious decision) to create a physical representation of these and a willingness to TRUST yourself (that the ideas that you come up with are able to become part of your life and not just some crazy pipe dreams!) Funnily enough, that first vision board I ever made had two things on it that came to reality in incredibly specific ways within the next 3 years – an overseas trip and a beautiful teaching venue. Since then things that I’ve had in my visions that have subsequently become part of my life range from making wonderful new friends, getting a magazine – writing contract, selling my house for big profit in a ‘dead’ market and more than once I’ve had money arrive unexpectedly and in such a way that it was the perfect means to realise an item on my vision board. But, more importantly to me, I’ve had many personal growth aspirations on my vision boards and it’s been very cool to notice them become part of how I think and act and how much they have enhanced my day to day existence. .What do you really want?
As I allowed myself to (somewhat disbelievingly the first time) go through the process of making a collage of pictures and words of things that I thought would be cool to have in my life, I began to see that my life (which had become quite small – my “I can’t” definitely outweighed my “I can”!) COULD be big and happy and exciting. Oh dear, I thought. I’m going to have to be willing to step out of my comfort zone if those new things are to come true. But the brilliant thing about doing a vision board is that I notice the process of selecting images and words helps me to weed out the things that maybe other people want me to want, or that are too far out of my current ability to comfortably experience. So what I end up with is a set of goals that I feel capable of, that are achievable and excite (rather than terrify) me. How do Vision Boards work?? I’ve realised that it doesn’t matter if I believe in something outside of me (ie the Universe!) or not, and whether I think it’s me or some other force that brings my goals to fruition. I could believe that my time spent visioning is creating in me an energetic vibration that begins the process of my goals coming to fruition, or I can believe that I am simply offering my consciousness and subconsciousness a detailed illustration of my goals which will help keep me focussed and forward – moving. It doesn’t matter which paradigm I’m in, because the process is effective either way. Some people I know call it manifesting; others call it goal setting. I don’t care what its called! I just know that it’s good stuff, and that it gets my thoughts and imagination moving and gets me ripe for positive change. And when I pay attention after making a vision board – a month, 6 months, a year or two later - it’s easy to see exciting illustrations of how my thoughts create my reality and how I can absolutely influence my own experiences. Hunting and gathering I believe the most powerful part of the vision – boarding process is the “hunting and gathering”. As you scour magazines, images and words, there is a certain clarity and specificity which develop in your mind, and enable you to become aware of what it is you really want (and what it is you don’t want!). This focussed attention - this self – questioning (“Do I really want that?” and “Why does that word or image speak to me so much?”, “Do I feel wistful desire for what that image represents and at the same time hear my thoughts telling me its impossible or too hard?” or “What’s missing in my life right now?”) bring us to a space of honesty and imagination that can have surprising outcomes. Participants in my workshops often look at their finished vision board and realise that what they’ve made is very different to what they pre-conceived their goals to be. This is the power of allowing the heart and inner wisdom to speak. So, be prepared - the heart and the mind may have very different ideas about what’s going to make our future life better! What else makes a good vision board? An effective vision board speaks to you (it doesn’t need to speak to anyone else after all!). If it speaks to you, when you look at it you will be reminded of what makes your heart sing, what makes you feel good, of what you want to be possible, where your moon and stars are, and what you’ll feel REALLY great about when it’s arrived in your life. It’s a kind of signpost that keeps you on track when you’re inclined to get distracted and focus on other things, and forget where you wanted to head. It also (in the Law of Attraction paradigm) adds energy to thoughts about your vision, which facilitates all the universal cogs getting into gear, opens the doors that need to be opened and primes you to be receptive to that thing becoming part of your life.
