In the 1980s a woman called Louise Hay became an international phenomenon with her work on positive thinking, how to connect with what you truly want, and why what we say and think has such an effect on our daily lives. She wrote, lectured and taught what she had learned around the world and called the ideas “You Can Heal Your Life”.
She understood that how we live our life is often driven by a belief that we are somehow inadequate and this makes it very difficult for us to discover and act on what is best for us. And when we get to the point that we don’t know what we truly want or need anymore, deep happiness, peace and enjoyment of life just seem an impossible dream. In fact, our underlying beliefs about ourselves and life are the reason that frustrations, problems and health issues tend to reoccur. We can temporarily alleviate them by ‘trying harder’, ignoring them or with the support of a medical or other practitioner but unless we eliminate the root cause, the problem with eventually resurface. There are many systems using affirmations these days. Affirmations are a powerful tool. But they cannot be really effective if, at the same time as we are using them, we are thinking doubtful or disbelieving thoughts about them! The best way for affirmations to work is to first identify the negative thoughts (negative affirmations) that we are thinking (discover the weeds in our garden!) Next we need to realise where they have come from and work on understanding that we are not truly inadequate, a failure, guilty of bringing bad experiences on ourselves - whatever (pulling the weeds out of the garden). Also crucial to the process is learning to recognise and comfortably express emotions that we may have held for many years (get rid of rocks and rubbish out of the garden and fertilise it), so that our new positive self – talk (affirmations) are able to take root in our subconscious (planting new seeds in the garden). The goal of Heal Your Life is to provide people with a complete set of tools and ideas which enable them to move towards self- love and self- acceptance – with the intention that this will assist them to resolve problems, reach life goals and experience long-lasting positive change.
