I’d heard people talking about making vision boards, but it wasn’t until quite a while after I’d got interested in (and been working on) getting my anxious, defensive, wobbly life sorted out that I first had a go myself. Truthfully? I was a bit sceptical about their usefulness but it’s funny how I kept being drawn back to the idea over the years. Also funny that these days I’m encouraging and helping other people to make them because of the amazing experiences I’ve had with mine! For me, a vision board isn’t just about some fun collaging, “when I’m a millionaire and running my own day spa in Bali” activity. Yes its fun. Yes I do let myself dream big. But two cool things happen when I make a vision board… First, it gets me into real clarity – a space where I can cut right to the chase and see where I’m getting between myself and my own goals. Sabotaging myself if you like. For example I might look at a picture in a magazine and my brain immediately says ‘hey that would be cool – I’d LOVE that’ but then a very quiet voice in the back of my mind says “ yeah right, like you’re ever going to have THAT?!” I get to see real quick where I’m don’t feel worthy of that thing, where I don’t have my own back and am secretly not very keen on changing in the way that would be needed for me to have that thing. Bit brutal, but very helpful, when you want to shed the old ways. Very helpful in seeing how goals can go out the window very easily if you’re not 100% bought into them. VERY helpful in coming up with a vision for myself that is likely to actually happen.
Second, once I sort out the things that I DO feel 100% bought into, and I start assembling my vision on the paper, I experience this wonderful focussed state which is a sort of cross between excitement and wonder. And THAT’s where the magic begins, I believe. When I’m in that state I can feel my mind soaking up the idea that THIS is possible! THIS is within REACH! THIS is there for ME! There’s an inner joy and enthusiasm and confidence that just seems to be infused into me. Some people would call that being in a high vibrational state. Some people call it creative visualisation. It feels like both. Recently I had something happen from my vision before I’d even glued the picture onto the paper! Coincidence or synchronicity? Fantasy or reality? Does it matter? I just love the idea that I can, as my beloved Louise Hay says, use my thoughts to create my reality. Next time I’m going to write more about how I go about making a vision board.
