This time of year is my time to sit down with a cuppa and reflect - to see what needs to be released, what is to be kept and improved and what is to be brought in to my life. I start by asking myself about 20 questions in a space of quiet reflection (see http://www.healyourlife.com/it-s-a-new-year from Louise Hay). Even though I have studied and practiced Louise Hay's work for over 15 years, been teaching it for several years now and have vastly increased how much I love and believe in myself, yet again I am astounded at the power of a good question! Because the very first question had this response tumbling out of me...

“I think it’s our natural birthright to go from success to success all our life” (Louise Hay) What Louise is talking about is if we believe that we have something useful to offer the world and that we are capable, talented people able to succeed at whatever we do, we naturally experience enjoyment and satisfaction with our life. We naturally take committed steps in the direction of, have confidence in ourself and are free of the stress that inhibits our creativity and creative problem solving. Or put another way, we have an inner environment that fosters success. On our journey to self-awareness, self–acceptance and self-love one of the impediments to positive changes taking root and flourishing in our life is where we have an accumulation of unexpressed emotions. Each time we experience an emotion we either choose to acknowledge and express it, or to ignore and suppress it (or something in between). Our life can become ‘saturated’ with our unexpressed emotions, leaving no room for new ways of being to be internalised. Are you afraid of criticism??? A while back I was thinking… for as long as I can recall (we’re talking 30+ years here!) I had always got upset and defensive when it came to disagreements or anything that felt like criticism of me. When I witnessed other people in these situations it really surprised me how much less they seemed to be affected compared to me. Friends or family who I sometimes talked to about it would say “you’ve just got to let it be water off a duck’s back” or “just be yourself” and “don’t take it personally”. I wished I could have! I had no idea how to change and be like that.
Have you noticed how often we focus on the negative instead of the positive – specially when it comes to ourselves? Most of us continually walk around with a “must do better” message playing in our heads! Must do better financially! Must do better with eating habits! Must do better with exercising! Must do better… Must do better… Must do better…! |
